Sprains and strains are very common injuries that affect different parts of the body. A sprain occurs when there is excessive stretching or tearing of ligaments, fibrous tissue in your joints that connect your bones. A strain is the stretching or tearing of muscles or tendons, the fibrous tissue that connects your muscles to your bones.

The most common place to experience a sprain is in your ankle, while the most common strains occur in your lower back or thigh.

SprainsMinor sprains and strains can be treated at home with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) However, for more concerning sprains and strains; you may require medical intervention and even surgery.

If you are unable to walk without being in pain, unable to move a joint, or have any numbness or tingling in the injured area, seek medical attention.

Symptoms of a SPRAIN:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Limited joint mobility
  • Popping sound in joint

Symptoms of STRAIN(s):

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Muscle spasms
  • Limited joint mobility

During your initial evaluation, one of our providers at Pain Rehabilitation Associates will look for swelling and tenderness in the injured area. A discussion of the level of your pain will help determine the extent and severity of your problem, and a musculoskeletal examination can help identify which ligaments, muscles, and/or tendons have been injured. If necessary, you may need an X-ray or MRI to assess the full extent of your injury.
